The next recipe in the Edmonds Classics Cookery Book is: Chinese Chews
This has rolled oats, chopped dates, walnuts and crystallised ginger. I was expecting some chewy toffee like thing, going by the name, but they were these nice cakey bars. You have to like ginger to like these, which I do. The flavour combo of the spicy ginger, sweet dates and walnuts is really nice. Bruce really liked them as well.

The Chinese chew recipe I used to make from the Edmonds book did not have ginger or oats and it had cocoa as I recall. Do you have the original recipe????

This may not be the original recipe. It is in the Edmonds Classics last reprinted in 2011
